Prof. Masaru Yarime has been awarded a research grant by the U.S. Social Science Research Council (SSRC) in the amount of US$20,000. The project is Data Governance for Innovation for Sustainable Smart Cities: A Comparative Analysis of Japan, the United States, and China. Data-driven innovation has great potential to tackle pressing problems concerning sustainability, such as climate change mitigation, inclusive services to aging and declining populations, and resilience to natural disasters. Many challenges remain in facilitating data collection, sharing, and use to create innovation while addressing societal concerns about privacy and data security. This project aims to examine different approaches to data governance in smart cities, including independent data trusts, decentralized data linkage platforms, and centralized government management, by comparing Japan, the United States, and China. Implications are explored for public policy and institutional development on data governance across the globe.
