Professor Naubahar Sharif (Acting Head of PPOL) was awarded a 3-year research grant by the HKUST Center for Aging Science entitled “Towards a more inclusive Hong Kong: COVID-19, mental well-being, and mitigation strategies for a multicultural elderly community”.

The focus of the project will be on analyzing the psychological impacts of COVID-19 pandemic, inter-ethnic variation, and sources of emotional resilience on Hong Kong’s elderly population of four ethnic origins—mainstream local Hong Kong Chinese, and three ethnic minority groups, namely, Indians, Pakistanis, and Nepalese, with a view to offering policy recommendations to the HKSAR Government based on its findings.

The grant amount is HK$2.73 million, and the project will run from 2022 to 2025. Furthermore, this project will comprise a multidisciplinary team of faculty members with expertise across different disciplines (ranging from psychology, sociology, anthropology, public health, to demography, as well as other fields not listed here).

In addition, we will closely partner with external non-profit organizations (notably Hong Kong Council of Social Services/HKCSS and Hong Kong Christian Service/HKCS) in implementing this project. By relying on a combination of qualitative and quantitative research methods, this project aspires to shed light on the issues being faced by elderly population, and specifically those of ethnic-minority origins, in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
