HKUST MPP Program Virtual Roadshow

What is an MPP project? The Master of Public Policy project is a subject used to analyze and solve all aspects of policy. At present, most Ivy League colleges and other world-class colleges have MPP projects. In recent years, this subject has also developed rapidly. It helps students use data analysis, economic analysis and management skills to evaluate and solve a series of urgent global issues.

Although many students have already studied in MPP projects around the world, more and more students will apply for MPP projects in the future, but many students still feel that MPP projects are mysterious and somewhat perplexed while applying. During the MPP program virtual roadshow at the end of March, MPP professors detailed the contents of the University ’s MPP program, including curriculum setting, employment prospects, etc., and the outstanding teachers and senior schoolmates shared their application and study experience.

After popularizing the knowledge positioning of the project, the students responded enthusiastically and actively asked questions during the Q & A session of the lecture. The professors also answered the questions one by one.

If you have other doubts, such as whether you can apply without language requirement because of the epidemic, what resources can the Department of Public Policy and HKUST provide for employment guidance, or what is the specific arrangement of the MPP ’s policy analysis project, we will answer you one by one at the second virtual roadshow.

In addition to the main professors of the college, we also invited a schoolmate who went to the University of Washington for the dual degree program, and the relevant admissions officers of the University of Washington to share their meaningful answers.

Overview

Our Master of Public Policy (MPP) is an interdisciplinary program that equips students with knowledge of the full impact of science and technology innovations and professional skills in the formulation and implementation of innovative solutions to current and emerging global challenges. Situated in the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), the program draws from research and teaching excellence from across a diverse range of disciplines to equip students with a set of core skills in data analytics, economic analysis and management to become effective policy professionals.

The degree requires the completion of 48 credit hours (most courses are three credit hours). All students admitted to the MPP will be required to complete the program on a full-time basis, a minimum of 12 credits and up to a maximum of 15 credits of coursework per semester.

As part of their 48 credits, MPP students have the option to specialize in one of the two following specializations: science and technology policy concentration or environmental and sustainability policy concentration. A specialization consists of at least four 3-credit courses, of which at least two are offered by the Division of Public Policy. Students pursuing this option must choose their elective coursework based on the requirements for their specialization.

The Policy Analysis Project is the capstone module of our MPP program. It aims to provide students with a valuable, engaging, educational and professional experience. It is a year-long project for which students work in teams of four to six people on challenges, issues and problems facing real-world organizations. Students will have opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills that they have learnt from the MPP program to analyze policy issues, develop solutions and produce professional reports for the client organizations.

We have jointly launched a dual degree program with the Evans School of Public Policy and Governance at the University of Washington. MPP students participating in the program will receive a Master of Public Policy (MPP) from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a Master of Global Public Administration (GMPA) from the University of Washington in two years.
